Bixente Lizarazu is one of the stars of France's 1998 World Cup triumph. Scored their fourth goal in the win over Saudi Arabia in group stage to round off trademark charge into left side of box. Joined Bayern Munich in 1997 from Athletic Bilbao only after FIFA had to rule on a protest by Bilbao. Can play either wing back or midfielder. Better coming forward to join attack than defending. A fast, attacking player in the mould of former French great Manuel Amoros. Remained a Jacquet favourite despite an injury-plagued 1997-98 season during which Lizarazu missed several internationals. Made good comeback in 0-0 draw away to Sweden on April 22, just in time for inclusion in World Cup squad.

Pacy and enterprising left-back, Lizarazu made his international debut as long ago as 1992. He played every one of France's games in Euro 96 and France 98, drawing comparisons with the legendary Manuel Amoros. Although his time at Bayern has been badly disrupted by injury, he remains one of the key players in the national team, able to play in either a flat back four or bombing forward in the wing-back role.
